Speak Up

I remember a day in school where we learned about racism and the African-American Civil Rights Movement. We learned that prior to the movement racism was extremely widespread. It was a popular belief that white and black people should be treated differently. However, decades later it is unthinkable. People cluck their tongues at the thought of racism and shun those who still cling to outdated beliefs. My grandma on my father's side is sadly still racist. We have not had a relationship for over twenty years as a result. It is unthinkable to me that she still believes the color…

Everything is brilliant now

Right now, this very minute, life is better than it has ever been. Technology has transformed our lives. We can interact with people thousands of miles away at the touch of a button. Medical technology helps us to diagnose and treat almost every ailment we suffer. Citizens have the right to vote, to speak their mind, to incorporate businesses, to trade, and profit from their endeavors. Not too many decades ago you could be convicted for poaching a deer from the lord’s lands just in an attempt to feed your family. Now we waste more food at every meal than…

Where did the money go?

Uncategorized, World Views , , , ,
The Occupy Wall Street movement, the 99%, argue that "our" money has been taken from us by the richest 1%; that the richest 400 people own the majority of our wealth. However, they have failed to do some rather simple math about what would happen to that money were it distributed. According to a this article on Huffington Post, the richest 400 people in America have a total of around $1.37trillion; that's $1,370,000,000,000. Wow! What a lot of money! Or is it? There are roughly 300 million people in the United States; that's 300,000,000. What would happen if we were…

Cap and Trade for Carbon Emissions

Uncategorized, World Views , , ,
The original article here is by Kevin Drumm. "As nasa climatologist James Hansen has warned, we are nearing—if we haven't already passed—the tipping point at which the concentration of carbon in the atmosphere becomes so high that feedback loops will cause it to keep increasing on its own even if humans never emit another CO2 molecule again." While it doesn't sound radically different from similar schemes already in effect, the cap and trade system is a way to introduce competitive market forces into the arena of enticing companies to reduce their carbon emissions.  The premise is that if company B…

Does it really matter?

General, Uncategorized, World Views , , ,
I was talking with a friend of mine after writing my last blog post.  We talked about the presidential race, the current economic crisis, and the banks in Iceland, among a smattering of other popular topics of current interest.  My friend, when presented with a verbal painting of potentially impending doom, responded "Does it really matter?"  I think this speaks truthfully to the apathy partially responsible for our current plight. Presidents come and go.  Political and economic policy sails in and out and the majority of people are none the wiser.  "Yeah, that was a bad policy or a bad…

McCain + Palin = Epic FAIL

Uncategorized, World Views , , , ,
I've been on the fence about the upcoming presidential race and have until now held off posting about politics on my blog.  Not because I don't have political views or an interest in the political process nor is it from fear of expressing my opinion.  Until now, I have stayed out of posting about this political process simply because it has taken me a couple of months to become informed enough about the candidates to have an opinion.  I didn't know enough about Obama, Biden, McCain, or Palin.  So I have spent the last two months researching, reading, watching, listening,…

Religious opposition to vaccination? Come on now!

Uncategorized, World Views
Heavily agree with @tangyerik on this one.  If you don't vaccinate your kids, you shouldn't be allowed to send them to public schools. http://www.canada.com/theprovince/news/story.html?id=cdcfbed5-3f6b-4013-a379-a2469eb47462 Mumps can cause meningitis (about 1 in 10 cases) and deafness.  This isn't the same as someone just showing up to work with a cold and getting the whole office sick.  This decision to allow a disease to spread could have far reaching consequences for hundreds of other people.  If you don't want your kids to be vaccinated, then don't expose others to the diseases they will more than likely contract.

No-one above the law

Of course not.  Well, that is, until they are.  It’s similar to the old phrase that if you kill 1 person you’re a murderer, kill 10 people you’re a serial killer, but kill 1 million people and you’re a revolutionary.  Form a junta and sign in your own immunity. Telecom companies that illegally spied on people have now been given immunity thanks to a rewrite of FISA (the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act).  Additionally this rewrite allows the president more ability to request and tap private communications information without court approval. Original NPR article: here. This is a scary time for privacy and freedom,…
